Carrie Tollefson is here with a Tuesday Training Tip to help you stay strong and focused the middle of a tough race. See Race Tactics, Part 1 – the beginning of a race.
Let’s break down how to stay mentally sharp and confidently as you push through those miles.
“Hi everybody, I’m Olympian Carrie Tollefson and also your National Fitness Director at Moms on the Run. And today’s Tuesday Training Tip, let’s talk about what goes on during the middle of the race.
Well, I know that you have your race plan. We talked about what happens in the very beginning. We think about our race plan. We stick to it. We relax into the race.
Well, in the middle of the race, this is where you kind of have to attack it. You want to mentally be engaged, not necessarily with what is actually going on, but our thoughts. We want to make sure we have positive word cues. We’re thinking about pushing or relaxing at certain points. So that middle part of the race is really where you have to think about attacking the race mentally.
Physically, you’re still there. You might be starting to feel some fatigue, but mentally is where you have to stay sharp. Because when the hurt comes on, we want to turn those negative thoughts off and we want to start pushing and getting closer to the finish line.”
