On July 3rd 2017, two Moms on the Run participants in Eau Claire, WI posted about a last minute idea for a pop up run in their team's private Facebook group. Just a casual four mile run in honor of the 4th of July. The post was met by lots of interest as women welcomed the idea of kicking off the holiday with a little exercise. A small group gathered the next morning….and a tradition was born. In 2018, Heather Yates, one of the coordinators the previous year, decided to take the lead and give women a little more notice. She posted a call to join her once again for a fun run saying... “The thing I love the most about MOTR is how we support each other along our running journey....I jokingly said you could only run 4 miles if you came to the 4th of July Run. The truth is, you can run your own run and it might be one mile, it might be two, it might be four, it might be more. Whatever your mileage might be, just come to start your 4th off with a run!” Heather’s words echo what many women find most beneficial about Moms on the Run – women start at their own level and are celebrated regardless if they are walking, jogging or running. It’s all about the journey. In 2018, Moms on the Run Eau Claire responded to Heather’s call with a group of 20+ women showing up to enjoy a run. To the amazement of all who showed up, Heather had taken things a step further and met women at the end of their run with popsicles and homemade medals. Paula, a runner that morning posted, “Thank you Heather! It was an awesome run and your small act of kindness really brightened my day.” Use a Hashtag This 4th of July, Eau Claire Moms on the Run will be celebrating with a Four on the 4th event once again. We want to encourage everyone to join in on the fun - whether you are racing at event like one of our partner races Red, White and Boom in Minneapolis, or enjoying a casual pop up run with friends – use a hashtag and post a selfie after your run.
