Meet Peppi, Our June 2016 Most Inspiring Mom

"The secret to success is showing up. When you show up, things happen. When you don't show up, nothing happens."

- Kathrine Switzer, the first woman to run
the Boston Marathon as a numbered entry

Congratulations to Waconia Moms on the Run participant Peppi, our June 2016 KIND Most Inspiring Mom! Peppi knows exactly what can happen when you choose to show up. She rarely missed a class during her first MOTR season in 2015, and that commitment has paid incredible dividends.

This past May, at the age of 50, she conquered her first half, the Lake Minnetonka Half Marathon. Not bad for someone who first notched a 5K just last year. Her new goal? To complete a 5K with a sub-9:00-minute mile average pace.

"Peppi is goal-focused and committed, working hard to push herself every class while encouraging others along the way," says Waconia MOTR head coach Deb Lensing. "She’s a strong role model because she is humble and has a modest demeanor."

But fitness goals and races didn’t always come easily for Peppi. She admits that for her very first race, she purposely signed up for a small 5K that was an hour away: "I didn’t want to be seen running by anyone I knew, thinking I'd be too embarrassed."

But not anymore. "MOTR, my coaches, family and teammates have wiped that idea completely out of my head," Peppi says. "No more treadmill. Now I run events all over the Twin Cities!"

She credits her coaches and teammates for helping her to make that huge mental shift. "Waconia Moms on the Run is a fabulous group of women! I look forward to every time we run together, having fun, enjoying the elements and urging each other on to run. I learn so much from my coaches and running mates every time I go, and I don't want to miss anything."

Way to show up, Peppi!

White Bear Lake/Shoreview Moms on the Run
There is a type of strength that goes into motivation, the strength it takes to motivate you into getting up and getting out of the house when you don’t feel like running. Another long training run, the same type of training that has continued over the last 36 weeks, step after step fighting the battle between head and body. It can be exhausting.

Marathon training has put me through some pretty tough paces. It has pushed me further than I ever thought I could be pushed. But there is a kind of pride when you finally get the nerve to put on your running clothes, tie your hair back, get dressed and head out the door. But in one instance you decide to bring your team with you. You put on your Moms on the Run training shirt and a SparkleSkirt. This gives a whole new meaning to motivation. You feel the inner strength start to grow, and the adrenaline starts to flow. Once dressed you have the desire to make that shirt and SparkleSkirt perform, to be ‪#‎MOTRstrong!

You don’t want to disappoint. You dig deep and hit the pavement hard and push yourself to complete each mile with dignity and a smile. You may be alone physically but you know you have your teammates with you with every step. You just dig deep and keep pushing forward. To quote one of my mentors, Coach Beth Jensen, you “Sparkle Up!”

Sparkle Up I did. This last 12-mile training run was not fast or pretty, but mentally I finished strong. To me this is what is important -- finishing strong. Now it is time to taper and to take that same determination into the marathon. My mantra for all of my training runs has always been, “Dig Deep,” but it is now “Sparkle Up!”
