Moms on the Run began 11 years ago with the simple mission of helping women learn to run. While our signature learn-to-run program is still a foundational part of our program, we have helped many women transition from beginner to intermediate and advanced runners. In 2018, we brought Olympian Carrie Tollefson on board to help us continue to meet the needs of our experienced runners. Now in the lead as our National Fitness Director, Carrie shares a few insights into our revamped intermediate training program. Q: Without giving away too much, tell us about the intermediate training program this year and why you’re excited about it?
A: We have tried to incorporate all different types of workouts to build strength and speed. Whether you are running your first 5 or 10k or trying to set a new PR this plan is great. We have you doing hills, intervals, progression runs, fartleks, and tempos. Working all systems to get you fit and ready for the start and finish line! Q: What are you trying to accomplish with the program? A: When I wrote this plan I wanted to accomplish a lot of things with our athletes. I want to meet people where they are in their training. Some have come from a winter of not so much running or walking so we needed to introduce the training again in a way that works for everyone. We also want to help people achieve their fitness goals. I also like to introduce workouts that people may have never done. This is such a nice plan to help all levels achieve their goals. Q: How will women who have been involved in MOTR for a few years benefit from this training? A: Returning members will experience more variety and new challenges. I have worked to really increase the mixture of the workouts since I joined the staff. We do repeat the workout, but only one time in the season, so you can get an idea of what your paces are and how your body feels as it makes progress. I think being a runner for 30 years has given me ideas for loads of different workouts, so just sharing my knowledge with our athletes has been a fun way to approach the plan. We're excited that with Carrie, our training programs will continue to remain fresh and exciting year after year. If you are an intermediate or advanced runner, you can join any of our locations and know there is a group for you. Come run with us!
