Tami had an eye on Moms on the Run for nearly a decade. First, hearing about the Forest Lake group and then learning about the Maple Grove group while she ran in a Moms on the Run 5K. But both were over an hour from her home near St. Cloud.
Then she learned about franchising opportunities. So instead of going to another Moms on the Run location, she decided to bring a MOTR location to her. In December 2014 she opened the St. Cloud group and has been running with her team ever since.
When coaching, Tami takes the time to educate her team on things like
- correct running form – maintaining an easy stride with your feet aligned and your hands and arms relaxed
- nutrition – considering the timing of your carb intake (pre-workout) and protein (post-workout), along with healthy options during a race for energy boosts
- breathing – inhaling and exhaling in a consistent and rhythmic pattern to bring oxygen to your body and help avoid side stitches
- injury prevention – dedicating part of your workout time to dynamic strengthening and static stretching to keep muscles strong, long and lean
Tami happens to be a natural coach and educator. She home schools her three kids, Dalten (11), Callum (7) and Ada (4). Educating also plays a big part in what she does at her other job, working as a Certified Nurse Practitioner for virtuwell, a 24/7 online clinic that helps people with things like minor illnesses, birth control, rashes or acne.
At her job, she diagnoses and treats simple conditions like sinus infections and bladder infections. But sometimes even simple conditions, come with complex questions. Patients want to know the fastest way to feel better, whether antibiotics are right for their situation, and when something is contagious. So Tami will often talk with patients and help them understand how the body works when it’s sick and trying to recover.
While motivating her team and helping others maintain their best health, Tami is gearing up for her next race. She is currently training for Grandma’s Marathon in June, so she’s fitting in the long runs when she’s not coaching or working. She’s careful to mix in tempo and threshold runs, speed work, hills, and intervals to improve her own endurance and speed. And while she enjoys any length of run, her ultimate goal is to someday run an ultra race.
